Just off the airport south of Kuta Beach there are sections of reefs that causes huge waves as the swells cross over them (slowing down the bottom part of the swells.) These sections are called Airport left and Airport right according to the break. The photos on this page were taken from a boat taking me out to these waves.
There is also Kuta Reef which runs just off shore the full length of Kuta Beach. Other surf spots on Bali are Uluwatu, Pandang, Jimbaran, and Sanur with reefs known as Dreamland and Lacerations.
My first experience with surfing, (Other then getting up and falling off, getting up and falling off in the small waves off the New Jersey coast.) was on these waves. My first and last as I haven't had a chance to go again since I came home. (I will go again. I will.)
Anyway to make a long story short and it was short. I got out of the boat and paddled out to wait for a wave. It didn't take long, I passes up a couple of waves that didn't look that promising, then got up started down the face of a wave that turned out to be bigger then I thought and ended up in the water with a torn hamstring. I was glad my boat hadn't taken off yet. (The boats take surfers out to the break then go back to shore to wait for more surfers who want to go out. They sometimes take surfers who are finished back.)
So I limped around Kuta for a few days. Drinking Arak and partying with the Aussies who had talked me into trying waves that were to big for a beginner. I had a massage from a women on the beach but I still left Kuta with a sore leg. Oh! she was good but it wasn't till I met a guy in Ubud that I could walk without pain.
If you have never surfed large waves, I recommend you stay in the area off of Kuta Beach and not try the larger waves till your ready.
If you do try the larger waves you may want to see:
Wayan Karta:  Hondman Stret Padangtegal Ubud. (0361-978370)  He is a great masseur and very reasonable.
