Back                                                             Security

I've been hearing over and over again that the Republicans are the party that will make us safer. Let's take a good look at the reasoning.
   1. There hasn't been an attack on the homeland for 5 years. That's true, but let's remember there wasn't an attack by al Qaida from the first World Trade Center till 9/11 (8 years) on the homeland. There have been more attacks around the world. Many more.
   2. The Republicans are tougher on terrorism. RIGHT!  People we just had two accidents at two different chemical plants that released dangerous gasses in less then a week. One in Houston Texas and one in Apex North Carolina. In North Carolina 17,000 Residents had to be evacuated there were also evacuations in Houston. See:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/07/plant.fire.ap/index.html Both gasses could have been deadly.
People the Democratic party has been warning about chemical plant protection and trying to fully implement the 9/11 commission ever since it came out. I've caught many debates on the senate and house floor on C-span and all I hear from the Republicans are excuses why we can't make the chemical plants subject to government oversight. They argue that the plants are policing themselves and it would cost them to much if the government had the right to inspect them.
Let's examine the issue. Can you tell me how it would cost more to put in place safety and security procedures that are needed because the government is going to inspect the plants, or because you want to. If you are going to run a safe plant or storage area, the money will be the same. The government doesn't charge the chemical plant for the inspections unless the company doesn't imply with the codes. In fact it would save them money. If they were diligent in their operations they would get a free inspection after the work of upgrading their safety procedures was finished and it would be cheaper to have a free government inspection then hire a outside agency to inspect their procedures during the year.
People remember Bhopal India. Think about that plant then think about the New Jersey side of the Hudson River, just across from New York City.

The Republicans have had a ball painting the Democrats as being weak on terror, when in fact it's they who are weak. It's been more then two years since the 9/11 commission put out their recommendations and the Republicans have been in power for the entire time. They have put very few of the recommendations into effect.
They have, just before the mid term election passed a port security bill, a woefully inadequate port security bill. When the Democrats wanted to ad amendments to the bill they were blocked. One senator wanted to ad and amendment that would protect the rail lines and was told that it was a PORT protection bill, (There has been very little protection for rail transportation.) even though they themselves had added an amendment that would limit internet gambling. People what is more important restricting Internet Gambling or the safety of our mass transit systems.
What took them so long to pass that bill. Why was it done in the dark of night without any input from the Democratic party? Why just before the midterm elections? and why haven't all the 9/11 commission recommendations enacted?

The administration has said that the war in Iraq has made us safer even though twelve of our intelligence agencies have said it a "cause celebre" for Islamic extremists, breeding deep resentment of the United States that is likely to get worse before it gets better. People read what I said before the last presidential election about the war in Iraq. http://www.legongventures.com/thewariniraq.htm I agree with the administration that now that we are there we can't "Cut and Run." but I don't agree with them that "We have to stay the course." What we have to do is WIN or at the very least leave at our time with a fairly stable government in place but staying the course isn't going to bring that about. We clean out one hornet's nest only to find out the hornets have set up another nest someplace else. We go there and the hornets fly back to the nest we just left. That's no way to win.
The more innocent people who die (whither by us or not.) fuels the fire of terrorism against us.
If you really want to know who has the right ideas on how to fight the war on terror, take the time to watch the senate and house debates, with an open mind. You might be surprised at what you'll learn.
People keep telling me the Democrats have no ideas. People the Democrats have no say. The Republicans have made sure of that but the ideas and plans the Democrats put forward on the floor of the House and Senate along with the questions they ask in hearings prove they are the ones who should be leading our country. If you really want to be safe take the time to become informed. DON'T just listen to talking points or 30 second political ads. And whatever you do, take no ones word. Find out the facts for yourself.

   3. I just found this:   Aug. 25 2006: Dynamite found in luggage: People this was after the plane landed in Houston after a flight from Argentina.
