Some of the most beautiful gardens I've ever seen were in Bali. The Balinese don't create gardens for themselves, nor even for the tourists. They create them, as they create everything, for the Gods. On my first trip to Bali I stayed in a home stay, just outside of Ubud, that had a little ditch running from the road for about 200 yards to a large creek that ran through rice paddies behind the home stay, at first as I said  it was a ditch, but I watched it grow day by day. The second morning when I went out there were four young men cutting weeds and raking the area around the ditch and by the time I came back they had dug a new trench, this time it curved back and forth around small trees. The next morning as I left to shop They were already working and by the time I came back they had dug pools, dammed up (What was by now a creek) with piles of stone to form small waterfalls and creating small ponds. Widened some sections and filled these with small stones gathered from the road side or the creek bed in the back, here the water slowed but rippled through the rocks. It was beginning to be very attractive. By the end of the week they had planted Water lilies plus a lot of flowers and other plants along and in this beautiful creek. To my surprise when I went to take a good look at one of the lilies there were small fish swimming in one of the little ponds they had created.
