| Going wireless while on vacation. |
| I've had to wait & waste vacation time at pay phones in Thailand & Bali. A problem I wouldn't have had if I had a cell phone. You can take your own if it works out of country but I still recommend that you either rent a phone in the U. S. or if you are going to be on vacation for an extended stay, two weeks or more, you might think about buying one while abroad. The cost varies but expect to pay about $20.00 plus preloaded airtime, which can be added at any time either by the mobile provider or the seller. No contract is required when buying the phone in country. Caution: find out before you buy if your buying units or minutes & if units how many minutes to a unit. & whether the phone allows overseas calls. Also find out how many minutes an overseas call uses compared to local calls. |
| I found these three cell phone companies for you, or you can do a search. Buy under cost Planet Omni |
| Abroad Phone Rental (Asia). You can most likely buy or rent a cell phone at most airports. |

| Why not use E-Mail? |
| Take the E-mail addresses of
your friends, work & family with you. You can print your address book
off your computer. Then when your there you can ask at your hotel if they
have access to the internet, most will, or if they know of a cyber-cafe.
Or make friends with someone who has access then go ahead and contact your
friends back home.
It sure beats postcards for speed. You may have to pay or if your using
your new friends' computer you might want to buy a bottle of wine or a gift
for them. It should still be cheaper then using the phone. Also don't
forget to check the local libraries, most now have access to the internet
and you can usually get free computer time.
You may want to set up an internet E-mail (Hot Mail) address before you leave that way you can access your return mail from any computer. i.e. you send an E-mail from a cyber-cafe and leave that location. Your friend back home clicks reply to sender. That message will go back to the cyber-cafe & you'll never see it. |
| p.s. don't forget your street address book. You'll still want to send postcards. |
